Boys Varsity Football Fall 2024-2025 Scholarships.
Bill Beck Scholarship
Bill Beck Scholarships applications will be accepted by any graduating senior football players. Applications are accepted between January and March 15. Go to "Team Files" to download the application.
For those who participated in PMJC can also apply for a scholarship. Contact PMJC for that information.
The Bill Beck scholarship was named in honor of the first head coach for the Penn Manor Comets. Bill Beck was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. He played football in high school and at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. Upon graduation he was recruited to play football for the New York Giants and Chicago Bears. Instead he became a Social Studies teacher and football coach for Braddock High School and then Brownsville High School. In 1969, he moved to Millersville and became the first head coach for the Penn Manor Comets. He began the program with the freshman team and played their first varsity game in 1973. In 1974, the Comets won the Lancaster-Lebanon Section II Championship. Coach Beck remained the coach until 1981. In 2006, the scholarship program began and continues today.
Net proceeds benefit the Bill Beck Scholarship & Football Fund. Annually, scholarship winners are selected to be used during their first year following high school graduation. To date, 42 scholarships have been awarded. Scholarship award winners are selected based on the following five areas of criteria:
- Financial Need
- Years of Participation in the Penn Manor Program
- Commitment Level to the Program During Senior Year
- Essay Explaining Need and What Comet Football has Taught
- Acceptance to a post-secondary level of education
Annually the Penn Manor Grid Iron Club holds a Bill Beck event to raise money for the scholarship. This event is traditionally held on the last Saturday evening in January.
Go to Team Files to obtain the application. Applications are due by 3/15 annually.
Note: Due to successful fundraising and participation the amounts of the scholarships have increased. Without this ongoing effort this level could not be maintained. However, the amounts of the award and the number of the award are subject to change depending on funding.
