STUDENT – ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

 

NAME: Emily Riggs

 

CLASS: Freshman

 

SPORT: Softball

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Freshman standout, Emily Riggs has quickly emerged as a major threat both in the field and at the plate for the Lady Comets. A sluggish start to the season has now emerged into a hot streak that has the Comets in a position to make District playoffs and possibly even League playoffs. Emily’s breakout game came this past week vs rival Hempfield. She went 5-5 at the plate and led the team to HUGE victory 12-5. It will be very exciting to watch Emily and this squad the rest of the way!

NAME: Jamar Gordon

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Unified Track & Field

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Jamar has been a partner on the Unified Track and Field team for both years of its existence. Jamar is well liked by all the athletes on the team and is quick with a smile and a word of encouragement for his teammates. He especially looks forward to the Unified practices on rough days because of the positive mindset that he leaves with. Jamar will be greatly missed by the coaches and his friends next year. Jamar will be attending Lebanon Valley College as a Music Business Major.

NAME: Bryce Julian

SPORT: Boys’ Volleyball

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Bryce has shown work ethic far and above what coaches could ask for. He puts in the time outside of the gym just as hard as he works inside the gym. He understands what it means to be a Comet and the responsibility that comes with it as a student athlete. He plays the sport with passion and backs his talent with a humble demeanor. Bryce has been and will continue to be a vital part to the team’s success through the stretch run of the regular and post season.

NAME: Kaden Peart

 

CLASS: Junior

 

SPORT: Boys’ Tennis

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Kaden is a member of the Boy's Tennis team. Each and every day he comes to practice with a positive attitude and a willingness to put in the hard work. His enthusiasm is infectious and that helps to ensure that everyone else around him enjoys their time on court as well.
He has continued to improve each day and has started to climb up the roster as a result. In fact, he recently won his first varsity match! His work ethic extends off of the court as well, as he is a member of FBLA and maintains a 4.3 GPA.

STUDENT – ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

 

NAME: Dylan Frey

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Baseball

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Senior First Baseman, Dylan Frey has had a solid season but has really started to heat things up in the last few weeks of the season. This past week Dylan hit .700 with 8 RBIs which lead to two big wins over Lebanon and McCaskey. A cornerstone on the field and in the dugout, Dylan has emerged into a strong leadership role. If the Comets are to make the postseason and mount a run, Dylan will need to continue his tear and major contributor. Should be a fun two weeks as the Comets make their push.

NAME: Jayln Clow

 

CLASS: Sophomore

 

SPORT: Track & Field

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Through her tremendous leadership skills in the classroom and through her athletic achievements, Jalyn is prime example of student-athlete. She competes in three events (shot put, javelin, and discus). Jalyn excels in all three events but in her last meet she threw a 135’ 9” in discus which places her 5th ALL TIME in the Lancaster Lebanon L League and just 5 feet off of our school record! A tremendous asset to the team, it sure will be exciting to watch Jalyn compete throughout the remaining schedule and post-season.

NAME: Alayna Adams

 

CLASS: Junior

 

SPORT: Girls’ Lacrosse

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Alayna has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills throughout the early 2019 season. Not only has she been a true leader off the field, she leads by example on the field as well. Posting five goals thus far this season, she has been a threat on the draw circle and in transition. Alayna works her absolute hardest and puts forth maximum effort for the entire fifty minutes of every single contest!

NAME: Matt Julian

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Track & Field

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Matt is on the verge of becoming the best pole vaulter in the Lancaster Lebanon League has ever seen! His work ethic and competitive nature has driven him to new heights, literally! Matt has already vaulted the highest two vaults in the history of the LL League. He started his spring by winning second place at The PIAA Indoor State Championships and competing at the New Balance Indoor National Championships. After his time at Penn Manor concludes, Matt plans to continue his vaulting career at Liberty University in Virginia.

NAME: Ryan Glenn 

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Baseball

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Ryan is entering his Senior Season as Varsity Captain for the 2019 season. Coming off a very successful Junior Season which he was named to the Lancaster-Lebanon League Second-Team All Star Team, Ryan looks to build upon his individual and team success this season. Ryan has also been named one of Penn Manor’s nominees for the LL League Brackbill Scholarship Award.  Ryan has earned this honor by being an ideal student athlete in the classroom and on the field of play. Per Coach Stuart, “Ryan is a perfect candidate for the Brackbill Award. He’s a top-notch student in the classroom, he’s an academic outside of the classroom, and he’s the ultimate team leader on the field”. Although undecided on a destination beyond high school, Ryan hopes to further his academic and athletic career at the next level. 

Joshua Heckman

STUDENT – ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

 

NAME: Joshua Heckman      

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Lacrosse

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Throughout his high school career, Josh is a First Team All LL League Face Off All-Star as well as a Second Team All LL League Midfielder (Sophomore & Junior seasons). By Josh’s junior year, he was named captain by his teammates and coaches (and again his senior year). Heckman has shown that he can single handily take control of a game from his dominance at the face off to his unmatched offensive skill set. He is coming off a 50 goal & 19 assist season and will look to build upon those stats this season. Josh has also been named one of Penn Manor’s nominees for the LL League Brackbill Scholarship Award. Josh has earned this honor by being an ideal student athlete in the classroom and on the field of play. Heckman will be attending Swarthmore College where he will continue his Lacrosse career. The expectations coming into Josh's senior year are very high, and we know Josh is ready for anything that will come his way.

NAME: Lauren Sensenich

 

CLASS: Junior

 

SPORT: Sports Medicine & Athletic Training

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Lauren has been a student trainer for the athletic training staff for three years. During this time she has demonstrated her skills as a leader and dedicated worker. She is willing to do any task asked of her and does so without any hesitation. Lauren assists with all of our teams here at Penn Manor, but it is during football season that she truly shines. She gives up the last two weeks of her summer vacation to be at the start of football camp and is with the team every day up until the last game of the season. Through her hard work she has earned the respect of the coaches, players, and her fellow student trainers. As an upperclassman, Lauren has also taken on the role of a teacher, helping new students learn some of the basics of athletic training and the day to day operations of the athletics training room. In addition to being a student trainer, Lauren is also a member of the Manor FFA.

NAME: Alexandra Martino

 

CLASS: Junior

 

SPORT: Sports Medicine & Athletic Training

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Alex has been a student trainer for the athletic training department for the past three years. During this time she has shown a love for sports medicine and a want to learn as much as possible. Alex has given up her weekends and holidays to work at sporting events at Penn Manor. She will complete any task asked of her and is always looking to help. This was best show this winter during wrestling season. Alex volunteered to work not only the Penn Manor wrestling tournament, but also asked to work and gain experience at the Conestoga Valley and LL League Tournaments. She has gained the respect of the coaches and athletes here at Penn Manor but also that of the other trainers. It is rare to see a student give so much of themselves to help others and that is what makes Alex so deserving of this spotlight.

NAME: Wes Kendig

 

CLASS: Sophomore

 

SPORT: Swimming

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Wes has been consistently dropping times in is 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly throughout the season. On January 15th vs McCaskey he swam a season best 22.79 in 50 Freestyle and 56.21 in 100 Butterfly. Wes has also been a crucial part of our 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays that are both in the Top 5 of the Lancaster Lebanon League. Catch Wes and the rest of the Penn Manor Swim Team, Tuesday January 22nd vs Manheim Township at Millersville University!

STUDENT – ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

 

NAME: Cole Shenk      

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Wrestling

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Cole is a great leader and a huge asset to the Penn Manor Wrestling program. He’s a great role model for not only the underclassmen but a mentor to the Junior High and Elementary programs. Last week vs Lampeter-Strasburg, Cole was the second to last meet of the day and in order for the team to secure victory, needed to avenge a prior loss from earlier in the year. His opponent was 14-1 going into the matchup. Cole rose to the challenge and won on a 9-5 decision. Cole has tallied a total of 15 wins on the season the last coming on January 23rd vs Manheim Township. In addition to Cole’s success on the mat, he was accepted to both the United States Naval Academy and West Point. He will attend the Naval Academy after graduation. Coach Vernalli added, “Cole is a great young gentlemen who I am lucky to have the chance to coach. I expect great things from him as he continues his education and career at the Naval Academy”.

SPOTLIGHT:

Returning from an injury that cut her 2017-2018 season short, Kate has regained her place on the Lady Comets squad as a leader and a constant contributor to their success. This week, Kate has announced her commitment to continue her basketball career next year at DeSales University! Be sure to catch Kate and the rest of the Lady Comets next week as they host Hempfield on Tuesday, January 22nd.

NAME: Anna Sugra

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Swimming

 

SPOTLIGHT:

A fantastic swimmer and team leader, Anna always works hard and knows the sport of swimming very well. She is well aware of her competition which allows her to prepare for races and see the success she has. Anna holds the second best time in 200 Freestyle & 100 breaststroke. She is also a member of the 400 Freestyle Relay which is currently ranked third. In addition to Anna’s success in the pool, she has recently committed to Bloomsburg University!

NAME: Ella Hart

SPOTLIGHT:

Ella has been a constant bright spot for the Lady Comets as the season has unfolded. Currently holding a 5-7 record, Ella has led her squad with wins in three of last four contests. Ella posted 14 points on January 8th, in a dominant win over McCaskey. Next week, the Comets will be tested on the road vs Township and Warwick.

NAME: Ethan Hine

 

CLASS: Junior

 

SPORT: Basketball

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Ethan has played an integral part to a solid season for the Comets. Currently, posting an 8-4 record, with a Holiday Tournament Championship at Solanco. Ethan has been lighting it up offensively, especially from beyond the arc. On January 8th, Hine posted 20 points vs McCaskey. Ethan and the Comets look forward to a strong week vs Township & Warwick.

NAME: Jake Jesberger   

 

CLASS: Senior

 

SPORT: Ice Hockey

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Defensemen, Jake Jesberger has led the Penn Manor Comets Hockey team to an overall record of 8-5 and has the team in position to make a strong push towards the playoffs. In addition, Jake has been named to the 25th Annual CPIHL Annual All Star Game to be played at York Ice Arena on January 30th at 8:15pm.

Nick has launched the Comet Grapplers in to a strong 4-0 start to the season. Individually, Baker has gone 8-1 overall and placed 3rd at the Governor Mifflin Tournament held over winter break.

As a three-year Varsity Letterman, Freedom has led her team to a 3rd Place finish at the PIAA District III Championships and has qualified for the PIAA State Championships on January 11th & 12th at The Giant Center in Hershey!

A welcomed new addition to the reigning State Champions, Derek has played an integral part to the teams’ undefeated start to the season. On December 19th, Derek recorded a 299 game vs Manheim Township at Dutch Lanes!

NAME: Kailey Stoner

 

CLASS: Junior

 

SPORT: Girls Swimming

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Kailey had two crucial 3rd place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke to help the girls win.  Her 100 breaststroke time was 4 seconds faster than her personal best last year and she dropped .6 seconds in her 50 free from her personal best last year.

Senior, Kate Green has worked hard in the off season leading and helping other athletes within the Penn Manor Softball Program. Kate's approach to practice and improving her skills and abilities is inspirational to the younger players in our program. She will play an integral role in the success of the team this year as strong contributor and team leader.

NAME: Dominic Roma

 

CLASS: Junior

 

SPORT: Boys’ Volleyball

 

SPOTLIGHT:

Dominic is a junior libero and captain on the Boys’ Volleyball team. His dedication to the sport has been obvious all through the off-season, and he’s proven himself to be a strong leader. On the court and in the weight room, he gives 100% while still cheering his team on. He is the most vocal player on the court, constantly quarterbacking from the back row and encouraging his teammates. He will be a vital part of the team’s success throughout the 2019 campaign.
